How to Plan Your Year: A Simple Paper Method for 2027
Planning your year doesn't need an app, a framework or a weekend retreat. A pen, an hour and a few pages will do. Here is a simple paper method that works whether you use our planner or a blank notebook.
1. Look back before you look ahead
Write three things that went well this year and three you'd like to change. Keep it short. This is what your plan will answer.
2. Mark the fixed dates
On a year-at-a-glance calendar, circle what's already decided: holidays, trips, school breaks, renewals, deadlines. You'll see the busy stretches and the quiet ones before they arrive.
3. Write intentions, not resolutions
Under three short headings, write what you want more of, what you want less of, and three goals for the year. Make each goal something you could check at the end of a month.
4. Give every month a job
On a plans-by-month page, give each month one or two lines: a project, an event or a habit to focus on. Spreading goals across the year keeps January from carrying all of them.
5. Copy in birthdays and important dates
Do it once now and you won't hunt for them all year.
6. Plan one week at a time
Each Sunday, pick your top three priorities for the week, write the to-do list, and put appointments on their days. Ten or fifteen minutes is enough.
7. Review monthly
At the start of each month, reread your intentions and set that month's focus. At year end, a single review page closes the loop.
